What is Ivermectin and How is it Used?1, 2
Ivermectin tablets are approved by the FDA to treat people with parasitic infections such as onchocerciasis, strongylordiasis and helminthiases. In Malaysia, it is registered as an anti-parasitic and is ONLY used for animals, in the prevention of heartworm disease and certain internal and external parasites. It is important to note that these products are different from the ones for people. To date, NO Ivermectin product has approved for human used.
Ivermectin Products for Animals VS for People1
Ivermectin is used for large animals like horses and cows, which weigh a ton or more than us. Therefore the animal drugs, including Ivermectin are often highly concentrated. Such high doses can be highly toxic in humans.
Moreover, FDA reviews drugs not just for safety and effectiveness of the active ingredients, but also for the inactive ingredients. Many inactive ingredients found in animal products are not evaluated for human use. Or they are included in much greater quantity than those used in people. In some cases, the effect of the inactive ingredients intervening the absorption of Ivermectin into human body is still not known.
Ivermectin & COVID-191, 2
There is insufficient clinical data regarding the treatment of COVID-19 by using Ivermectin. The FDA has not reviewed data to support use of Ivermectin whether in treating or preventing COVID-19. WHO has so far only recommended the use of Ivermectin in clinical trials, where patients need to be closely monitored by expert physicians and experienced researchers to ensure its safety and effectiveness.
Taking a drug for an unapproved use can be very dangerous. Even the levels of Ivermectin for approved uses can interact with other medications, like blood-thinners. You can also overdose on Ivermectin, which can cause:
However, MOH Malaysia has given special approval for the use of off-label Ivermectin for clinical studies, in the treatment of COVID-19 to determine its effectiveness and safety.
Off-label use: the use of a drug which is not in accordance with the original indication or purpose of registration with any regulatory body or agency, whether in Malaysia or in other countries.
