Is drinking cold water really bad for you?

Ask most people born in or before Generation X, they will tell you that drinking cold water is bad. Do you find yourself in the above situation when you order a cold drink in front of them? Stuck in between and you are unsure yourself if it really is bad for you? We will be answering it for you today.

Benefits of drinking cold water:

  • Exercise - improves performance as it helps cool your body down faster during intense training. Improves performance in multiple sclerosis patients.

  • Helps fulfill your required daily water intake as it is more ‘drinkable on-the-go’ compared to hot water

  • Faster rehydration as it leaves the stomach faster

Risks:

  • Avoid if you are having flu as it may thicken your mucus and cause further nose block

  • Slows digestion right after meal due to the channeling of energy to warm the cool water in our body rather than digesting the food

  • Avoid if you have migraine that is triggered by cold water

  • Achalasia - studies have shown that it might be worse for people with achalasia as it may further constrict the passage

So, the next time you order a cold drink, you can feel at ease without guilt as you down something cooling on a hot and sunny day. Provided you do not have the above condition.

Our take home message: Drink enough water each day and know your own body condition.
