With the current haze that is occuring across Southeast Asia, it is advisable that we put on mask when we are out in the public. The question is, do you know how to wear the mask?

What is a surgical mask?

Surgical masks are loose-fitting masks that cover the nose and mouth, with ear loops, ties or bands at the back of the head. In this article, we will focus on surgical mask with ear loops.

What is its function?

The function of a face mask is to limit the spread of germs and to provide a physical barrier to fluids and large particle droplets. When used properly, it can prevent infections transmitted by respiratory droplets.

Who should wear a mask?

  • People with respiratory infection symptoms

  • People who care for patients with respiratory infection symptoms
  • Healthcare workers in clinical settings
  • People who visit clinics or hospitals during pandemic or peak season for influenza
  • Workers handling food
  • People in crowded or poorly ventilated places
  • People who are exposed to pollutants or haze

How to wear a mask properly?

Take note of the following on wearing a surgical mask:

  • Wash your hands prior to wearing the mask.
  • Choose the appropriate mask size.

  • The blue/green side of the mask should face outwards, and white side inwards.
  • The stiff bendable strip should be moulded over the nose bridge and fit snugly over the face.
  • The mask should cover the nose, mouth and chin.
  • Avoid touching the mask after wearing it as frequent handling may reduce its protection.
  • Avoid touching the outside of the mask when removing as it may be covered with germs. Only touch the ear loops.
  • After taking off the mask, discard into a rubbish bin with a lid.
  • Disposable masks should be used once and thrown in the trash.
  • Remove and replace the mask when it is damaged or moist.

Wear a surgical mask today as it can protect you and others from spreading germs and infection.
