Gout is a common inflammatory arthritis that affects 1-2% of the Malaysian population. Gout is caused by the deposition of urate crystals in the joints, typically the big toe. It can manifest as pain, redness and swelling at the affected joint.
The urate crystals are a result of high uric acid in the blood stream. As a result, people with gout should be discouraged from taking food with high uric acid content, and instead replacing the diet with nutritious foods with low uric acid.
