Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. The occasional episode of ED is not uncommon, but it may be a sign of something more sinister if it persists. ED can be divided into two categories, psychological and physical. Psychological causes of ED include stress, depression, anxiety, or relationship issues. Addressing these issues will indirectly resolve any ED problems.
More importantly, ED can be caused by physical diseases - examples include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, alcoholism, smoking, treatments for prostate issues, and sleep disorders. This is because sexual arousal is governed not just by the brain, hormones, and emotions, but also nerves, muscles, and blood vessels. Any damage to the physical structures around the male genitalia can lead to ED. Therefore, if you start facing performance issues in bed, keep in mind that a visit to your GP clinic might be warranted. There could be underlying health problems that require your attention.
