As mentioned yesterday, condoms are an effective method of avoiding sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They can also be used for contraception (i.e. avoiding pregnancies), though for long-term partners there are other more convenient methods which can be used. Examples include intra-uterine devices, depot injections, or hormone pills – these will be topics for another post.
There are actually male and female condoms, though their availability differ greatly. Male condoms are easily accessible at almost all convenience stores and supermarkets, so we will be focussing on them for this article.
For condoms to actually prevent STIs, the user must know how to use them properly. An important note: only latex and polyurethane condoms are helpful in lowering the transmission risks of STIs; natural skin condoms do not help in this aspect at all!
Here’s a video on how condoms are used:
If the condom breaks or is punctured during sexual intercourse, risks of STIs and chances of pregnancy will be equivalent to if it were not used in the first place. Morning after pills can help reduce the probability of female partners getting pregnant. Consult your doctor if you are worried about STIs.
